Now, let me start by saying if you’re a business law wiz and know the benefits of employees vs contractors, you don’t have to read this (or read on for a refresher or some insights for your other suppliers.)

I want to start by saying, these are just the reason we’ve chosen to go the employee route as we need to be able to coach, train and set hours etc. If after reading this your wondering if you should switch up your hiring structure then start here (the IRSs offical site): https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/independent-contractor-self-employed-or-employee

(then of course talk to a lawyer.)

Okay, with that out of the way, there are a few things I want to touch on, so I’ll pull the wording from the IRSs site, then expand on why it’s important for you.

Behavioral:

Does the company control or have the right to control what the worker does and how the worker does his or her job?

You betcha we do. That’s the reason you hire us. So we can ensure they’re trained, inspected and always improving. Plus, for your home (or some businesses, like medical offices) we’re there during the day and need to make sure our employees are there when it’s best for you.

We also are in control of the schedule so that you receive a cleaning appointment that is convenient for you.

Type of Relationship:

Are there written contracts or employee type benefits (i.e. pension plan, insurance, vacation pay, etc.)? Will the relationship continue and is the work performed a key aspect of the business?

Benefits. I’ve already answered this.. So that’s a big yep!

Executive summary: We offer some of [if not the best] compensation and a culture to find and keep the best talent in the city.

For the work performed, again yep. That’s what you hire us for (see benefits of outsourcing.)

So what? Well, at the end of the day it comes down to how much of control do you exert over your employees. Seeing as we are constantly training, coaching them (plus investing heavily into their education) and we’re extremely particular about each and every cleaning, we use employees.

There may very be a whole bunch of great sub-contractors out there who just know how to clean and are investing in themselves, but that’s a big risk. When it comes down to it, by hiring us (and our employees) you know that we are in control of every detail and if on the rare occasion we discover an oversight, we can coach our cleaning professionals and our entire staff on how to handle it plus work with them to come up with preventative measures going forward, so that it doesn’t happen again.

Here are the differences in conversations to subcontractors vs employees:

Contractor:

Here’s the address and the person’s name.

Go clean.

End.

Employees (what we do):

Meet me here at this address and this time, we’re going to walk through the facility with the manager (or owner) and bring you up to speed on what they want and need.

Then you’ll work with our trainer until you’re ready to go solo (or to join the team, depending on size and scope of work).

Then you’ll have feedback reviewing your work and to get your thoughts, so you can constantly be improving.

End. (Actually, it’s more repeat.)

Cheers,

Matt
